Mark Furstenberg is "often credited with being the first to bring really good bread back to DC" ("Chefs & Restaurants", Susan Barocas, Aug. 14, 2014, http://jewishfoodexperience.com/bread-comes-furst-bakery). With such pedigree it was incredibly important that his latest endeavor, Bread Furst, be as iconic as the man himself. Foremost, Bread Furst is a bakery and patisserie. But deeper than that it is an homage. Bread Furst's location on upper Connecticut Avenue NW is near to Chef Furstenberg's heart as it was the neighborhood in which he was raised. From the entrance passersby can glance in and witness the inner workings of bread making. Inside, patrons are inundated with the aromas and visuals of the pastries, breads, and a sundry of offerings. Truly, Bread Furst is a workshop dedicated to the craft of bread and a tribute to a man, a peoples, and a city. In May 2017 Chef Furstenberg was finally named, after numerous nominations, the James Beard Foundation's Outstanding Baker in the United States.
